*Stone and Star (2000)

The title Stone and Star is a phrase from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke entitled Evening. The central image of the poem is the appearance of stars in the gathering darkness; metaphorically, the shadowy landscape represents the part of us that is tied to the earth, while the distant stars represent the part of us that seeks a more profound spiritual reality. To be human is to belong both to the earth and to the stars; our lives are circumscribed and inspired by our dual natures. The idea of “dual nature” is reflected in the orchestration: the two solo violins, the soloists and the tutti. The musical gestures are also greatly contrasted in different ways: high and low, thick and thin, loud and soft, subject and object. At the beginning of the work the two types of music are sharply contrasted, but as the work progresses the two musics become embedded within each other. (BL, 2000)
