EDITH MATHIS

Swiss born soprano EDITH MATHIS started her career in her native country, followed by engagements at many German operahouses (Cologne, Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich etc.)

She also sang at London Covent Garden Opera, Metropolitan Opera New York, Opera de Paris, Salzburg- and Glyndebourne Festival, Wiener Staatsoper her major roles Cherubin/Susanna/Countess (Le Nozze de Figaro), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Marzellina (Fidelio), Ännchen ( Freischütz), Sophie/Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier), Zdenka (Arabella) etc.

She worked with Rafael Kubelik, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert v. Karajan, Karl Boehm, Colin Davies etc. The Bavarian State Opera Munich honoured Edith Mathis with the title “Bayerische Kammersängerin”. Further awards are: Mozartmedaille der Internationalen Stiftung “Mozarteum” Salzburg, Prix Mondial du Disque, Kunstpreis der Stadt Luzern etc.

Besides opera she was very ambitious in singing Lieder-Recitals and oratorios. Her discography contains all her repertoire.
For many years she was professor for Lied-Interpretation at the University of Music in Vienna. She holds masterclasses and works as jury-member at international singing competitions.

We are pleased to announce that Edith Mathis is to give
special master classes in German lieder and song, and Mozart operas during the
first period of the 2013 Festival. (8 – 18 July)
